Some critics have argued that there was a 'golden age' of TV themes between the mid-60s and the mid-70s, with many iconic tunes credited to the likes of Edwin Astley, (Department S, Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) and The Saint), Barry Gray (Joe 90, Captain Scarlet), Lalo Schifrin (Mission: Impossible), John Barry (The Persuaders) and Ron Grainer (Doctor Who, Man in a Suitcase, The Prisoner).
The music on this album is inspired and influenced by the soundtracks of those old shows; in that sense, 'One of our agents is missing' is a fanciful collection of incidental pieces and theme tunes for programmes which only exist in an imaginary televisual universe.

But if you listen carefully, you might just detect a narrative thread running through this album. This might involve an agent during the cold-war period being sent behind the Iron Curtain on an espionage mission. As the plot unfolds, he might be drawn into a tangled web of intrigue before being captured, imprisoned and interrogated. During his interrogation, as the prospect of escape fades to the distance, he might well find himself retreating to a space inside his head in order to avoid giving away any crucial information to the enemy.
